  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. If DTCs P0452 or P0453 are also set, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If DTCs P0452 or P0453 are not set, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect purge pipe from EVAP canister purge valve. Install a hand held vacuum gauge to EVAP canister purge valve purge port. Disconnect EVAP canister purge valve harness connector. Monitor vacuum on vacuum gauge. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Increase idle to 1200-1500 RPM. Does the vacuum gauge indicate an increase in vacuum? If yes, go to step  10. If no, go to next step.
  4. Reconnect the EVAP canister purge valve harness connector. Monitor vacuum on the vacuum gauge. Increase the idle to 1200-1500 RPM. Does the vacuum gauge indicate an increase in vacuum? If yes, go to step  7.
  5. Remove and then reinstall the fuel fill cap. Turn ignition on, with engine off. With a scan tool, monitor the FTP sensor voltage. Does the scan tool indicate FTP pressure within -0.5 to 0.5 in. H2O? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
  6. Does the scan tool indicate FTP voltage greater than 4.3 volts? If yes, go to DTC P0453: FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT - HIGH VOLTAGE . If no, go to step  8.
  7. Test the EVAP purge valve control circuit for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the conditions? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to step  11.
  8. Test for poor connections at the harness connector of the FTP. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to next step.
  9. Replace FTP sensor. When complete, go to step  12.
  10. Inspect the EVAP system for carbon release. Did you find carbon release? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to next step.
  11. Replace EVAP canister purge valve. When complete, go to next step.
  12. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  3.
  13. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
