Fuel Rail & Injectors: Installation

2004 Oldsmobile Bravada AWDSECTION Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: An open-end wrench must be used to support the fuel lines to rail connection during loosening/tightening to avoid damaging the fuel rail assembly.
  1. Transfer components to new fuel rail, if rail is being replaced. Install new upper and lower "O" ring seals to injectors. Install injectors to fuel rail assembly. Install isolators with new seals to injectors. Install injector retaining clip. Lubricate "O" rings at injector isolators prior to installing injectors into cylinder head.
  2. Install fuel rail to cylinder head. Install fuel rail bolts. Tighten fuel rail bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Reposition fuel line assembly. Install fuel line bracket and bracket bolt.
  3. Connect fuel rail bracket and nut to cylinder head. Tighten fuel line bracket bolt to specification. Connect fuel line to transfer line. To ensure proper connection and to fully seat the retaining tabs, lightly pull apart the connection. Insert fuel transfer line into fuel line connection. An audible click noise should be heard.
  4. Remove shop towel from throttle body. Install outlet resonator/duct assembly. See AIR CLEANER OUTLET RESONATOR/DUCT ASSEMBLY  under AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS. Connect negative battery cable. Tighten negative battery terminal bolt to specification. Run engine and check for leaks. Reset all preset radio stations and set clock to correct time.

  1. Install new upper and lower "O" ring seals to injector(s). Install retaining clip to injector, aligning tab on injector to notch in clip. Injector is fully seated when tabs are aligned and clip is engaged on fuel rail. An audible click should be heard upon engagement. Verify fuel rail port is engaged on each side of the clip.
  2. Align notch in clip to tab on fuel rail, and install injector with clip assembly to fuel rail assembly. Verify injector(s) is fully seated. Rear fuel injector rail (curved) must be installed before front rail assembly. Install rear fuel injector assembly (curved) into position. See Fig 2 .
  3. Lightly press on fuel rail to seat fuel injectors into injector ports. Install front fuel injector assembly into position. Lightly press on fuel rail to seat fuel injectors onto injector ports. Install fuel rail to manifold bolts and tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Support fuel rail lines with open-end wrench while tightening the transfer line fittings. Connect fuel line quick-connects. Tighten transfer line fitting-to-fuel rail to specification. Connect fuel rail bracket bolt at rear of intake manifold. Tighten fuel line bracket bolt to specification. Verify gasket is positioned properly on vacuum chamber.
  5. Install vacuum chamber to intake manifold. Apply Loctite(R) 242 (21485277) to vacuum chamber bolts. Tighten bolts in sequence to specification. See Fig 3 . Install vacuum line to vacuum chamber port. Install sleeve seals to intake manifold top cover.
  6. Install top cover into position, apply Loctite(R) 242 and tighten outer (upper) intake manifold bolts to specification. Apply Loctite(R) 242 to inner (6) intake manifold cover bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. Raise intake manifold up and connect electrical connectors to fuel injectors. Attach fuel line bracket to manifold. Tighten fuel line bracket-to-manifold bolt to specification.
  7. Install intake manifold assembly. See INTAKE MANIFOLD & SPACER (3.0L)  under AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS. Install outlet resonator duct assembly bracket to intake manifold. Tighten outlet resonator/duct assembly bracket-to-intake manifold nuts to specification. Install outlet resonator duct assembly into position.
  8. Tighten clamp at throttle body assembly. Position outlet resonator duct assembly to support bracket and install bolts. Tighten outlet resonator/duct assembly-to-support bracket bolts to specification. Tighten clamp at air cleaner assembly. Connect negative battery cable. Tighten negative battery terminal bolt to specification. Reset all preset radio stations and set clock to correct time.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
