Camshaft Timing Chain
Requirements:
• The transmission is removed
• The drive plate is removed
• The oil pan removed
• The sealing flange, transmission side, is removed
• The cylinder head cover removed
Removing
- Rotate the engine using the vibration damper, to the adjusting mark.
• The milled drive sprocket tooth on the crankshaft must align with the main bearing cap joint - arrow A -.
• The marked dot - arrow - must be aligned with the mark on the oil pump.
• This position is reached at every fourth turn.
The camshaft lobes - A - for cylinder 1 must face each other.
- Remove the camshaft adjusters. Refer to => [ Camshaft Adjuster with Timing Chain, Installing ] Camshaft Adjuster with Timing Chain, Installing.
- Remove the guide rail bolt - 1 - and pin - 2 - and remove the guide rail - A -.
- Remove the timing chain upward.
Installing
Conditions:
• The crankshaft is at TDC
• The high pressure pump drive sprocket is secured using the adjustment tool (T10363)
• The camshafts are secured using the camshaft bar (T10068 A)
- Guide the timing chain from above, through the opening in the cylinder head.
- Install the guide rail - A - and initially only install the pin - 2 - hand tight.
• Several links in the timing chain are copper colored. These chain links provide installation help. The 3 adjacent copper colored chain links are placed on the oil pump chain sprocket.
- First, install the timing chain on the oil pump chain sprocket. The mark must align with the center copper colored chain link - A -.
- Install the timing chain on the high pressure pump drive sprocket. The mark must align with the copper colored chain link.
- Install and tighten the guide rail bolt - 1 - hand tight.
- Insert the intake camshaft adjuster "24E" in the timing chain so that the copper colored chain link is aligned with the mark on the camshaft adjuster. Install the camshaft adjuster bolt hand tight.
- Insert the exhaust camshaft adjuster "32A" in the timing chain so that the copper colored chain link is aligned with the mark on the camshaft adjuster. Install the camshaft adjuster bolt hand tight.
- Check the position of the copper colored chain links with respect to the adjustment marks.
• After rotating the crankshaft, the copper colored chain links are no longer aligned with the adjustment marks.
- Install the timing chain tensioner - arrow -. Tightening specification: 50 Nm.
- Remove the camshaft bar (T10068 A) and tighten the camshaft adjuster bolts. Tightening specification: 60 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn.
• Counter hold the camshaft using a 27 mm open end wrench on the recess - arrow -. The camshaft bar (T10068 A) must not be installed when tightening the camshaft adjuster bolts.
Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
