The removal and installation of individual steering column switch components must be done in a specified sequence. Refer to=> [ Steering Column Switch Components, Removal and Installation Sequence ] Steering Column Switch Components, Removal and Installation Sequence.
• Risk of airbag deployment!
• The airbag could deploy if the airbag unit is handled incorrectly.
• Follow the safety precautions when working on the airbags.
When disconnecting and connecting the Battery, the procedure must be followed as described in the repair information. Refer to=> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
Removal
- Disconnect the battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
- Remove the steering wheel.
- Remove the steering column trim.
- Disconnect the connectors (depending on the vehicle equipment level) - 1 -, - 2 -, - 3 - and - 4 -.
• Do not twist the airbag spiral spring/return spring with slip ring (F138) on the steering column electronic systems control module (J527) out of its center position when removing it. The front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position.
- Remove the screws - arrows - and remove the steering column electronic systems control module from the steering column switch.
Installation
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:
The return lever on the turn signal switch (E2) could break off when installing the steering column electronic systems control module (J527).
The turn signal switch must be in the 0 position when installing the steering column electronics control module.
- Slide the steering column electronic systems control module onto the steering column switch.
- Install the screws for the steering column electronic systems control module and tighten them to 1.5 Nm.
