2003 Volkswagen Passat Sedan (3B3) L4-1.8L Turbo (AWM)SECTION ECM, Adapting to Throttle Valve Control Module
Engine Control Module (ECM), Adapting to the Throttle Valve Control Module
The adaptation teaches the Engine Control Module (ECM) various positions of the throttle valve when the ignition is on and the engine is stopped. These positions are stored in the control module Throttle valve position feedback takes place through the two throttle valve drive angle sensors.
The adaptation must be performed if:
- the throttle valve control module has been removed and reinstalled or was cleaned
- the throttle valve control module has been replaced
- another engine has been installed, and another throttle valve control module along with it
- the Engine Control Module (ECM) was replaced
Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1551 scan tool (or VAG 1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG 1551/3B cable
Test requirements
- Ignition switched on, engine not running
- All electrical consumers like, for example, lights and rear window heating must be switched off.
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
- If a cruise control system is present, it must be properly adjusted.
- The throttle valve must be in idle position (accelerator pedal must not be operated during test).
- Throttle valve control module must not be dirty (carbon deposits).
- There must not be any DTCs stored in DTC memory, checking DTC memory
- Coolant temperature must be 6 to 105 °C, See display group 04, display field 3
- Intake air temperature must be at least 6 °C, See display group 04, display field 4
Procedure
- Connect V.A.G 1551 scan tool (VAG 1552). Then switch ignition on and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01. (connecting scan tool and selecting ECM).

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX
- Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04. Press -Q- button to confirm input.
Indicated on display:
Basic setting HELP
Enter display group number XXX
- Press buttons -0-, -6- and -0- to select "Display group number 60". Press -Q- button to confirm input.
Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = display fields)
Basic setting 60 ->
xxx% xxx% x ADP in progress
After pressing Q-button, throttle valve actuator will be switched on without current.
- Adaptation step 1: The Engine Control Module (ECM) checks whether all test requirements have been met.
- Adaptation step 2: The throttle valve control module will be switched to no voltage (emergency running position). The angle sensor values for emergency running position are stored in the control module.
- Adaptation step 3: The throttle valve is set to a value above emergency position.
- Adaptation step 4: The output stage of the throttle valve actuator is switched off. Now, the mechanical spring must set the throttle valve to the previously learned emergency position within a specified time (spring return test).
- Adaptation step 5: The throttle valve is closed by the throttle valve actuator (under mechanical impact).
- Adaptation step 6. The angle sensor values for lower mechanical impact are stored in the control module. Finally, the lower electrical impact is derived from this (calculated) and stored in control module.
- Adaptation step 7: The output stage of the throttle valve actuator is switched off at lower mechanical impact. Now the mechanical spring places the throttle valve in emergency position (spring raising test).
- Adaptation step 8: Angle sensor values are checked.
Indicated on display: (1 to 4 display fields)
Basic setting 60 ->
xxx% xxx% 8 ADP OK
The adaptation has been successfully completed.
- End basic adjustment of the engine by pressing the -> key.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06. Press -Q- button to confirm input.
To store the values:
- Switch ignition off.
NOTE:
The control module can abort basic adjustment for the following reasons:
- Test requirements are not met
- Throttle valve control module or wire connection is faulty, checking.
After a cancelation, a DTC is entered in DTC memory. The next time ignition is switched on, basic adjustment is automatically repeated.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
