Recommended special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram
Requirements
- Respective fuses must be OK:
- Selector lever must be in -P- position.
- All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
- Parking brake must be engaged.
- Ground (GND) connections to transmission must be OK.
- Ignition switched off.
Vehicles with 01M transmission
Test sequence
- Disconnect 3-pin harness connector to Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68- (arrow).
- Observe safety precautions.
- Check harness connector for contact corrosion and ingress of water.
If harness connector is not OK:
- Repair the malfunction.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM), Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data.
- Generate readiness code.
If harness connector is OK:
- Measure resistance at 3-pin connector of Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68-.
Check sensor resistance.
- Measure sensor resistance between terminals 1 + 2 at sensor connector.
- Specified value: 800 to 900 ohms
- Check sensor for short circuit between terminals 2 + 3 and 1 + 3.
- Specified value: infinite ohms
If specified values are not obtained:
- Replace Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68-.
- Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM), Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data.
- Generate readiness code.
If no malfunction is found on sensor:
- Check wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.
Checking wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness, connect test box for wiring test.
- Check wires between test box and 3-pin connector to Transmission Control Module (TCM) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 1 + socket 65
Terminal 2 + socket 20
Terminal 3 + socket 43
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
Check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.
Specified value: infinite ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-.
Vehicles with 09A transmission
Note: Sensor is located inside the transmission and is not accessible from the outside.
Test sequence
- Disconnect 20-pin harness connector -2-.
- Observe safety precautions.
- Check harness connector for contact corrosion and ingress of water.
If harness connector is not OK:
- Repair malfunction.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM), Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data.
- Generate readiness code.
If harness connector is OK:
- Check wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.
Checking wires to Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness, connect test box for wiring test.
- Check for open circuits in wires between test box and 20-pin harness connector to Transmission Control Module (TCM) according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 5 + socket 36
Terminal 6 + socket 35
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
Check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.
Specified value: infinite ohms
If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Check resistance of Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68-.
Check sensor resistance.
- Re-connect 20-pin connector.
- Check sensor resistance between test box sockets 35 + 36.
Specified value: 400 to 600 ohms
- Check wires between test box sockets for short circuit to Ground (GND) and short circuit to B+ according to wiring diagram:
Socket 1 + 35
Socket 1 + 36
Socket 35 + 68
Socket 36 + 68
Specified value: infinite ohms
If specified values are obtained:
- Replace Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-.
If specified values are not obtained:
- Check internal wire in valve body:
If no malfunctions are found in the internal wires:
- Replace Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68-.
- Erase DTC memory of Transmission Control Module (TCM), Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data.
- Generate readiness code Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
