Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor And Barometric Pressure (BARO) Sensor, Checking

Barometric Pressure (BARO) sensor is located in control module for Diesel-Direct fuel injection system. The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor is a separate component and is located together with Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor in one housing at charge air cooler.

NOTE: When servicing terminals in the harness connector for the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor with Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, use only gold-plated terminals.

Recommended special tools and equipment
- VAG1526 multimeter or VAG1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1397 A Turbocharger tester
- VAG1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram

Test requirements

- The respective fuses of Diesel-Direct fuel injection system must be OK.
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 Volts.

Function test
- Connect diagnostic tester. Diagnostic Tester, Connecting
- Switch ignition on.
- Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 1: Check measured values."
- Select the measuring value "PID 11: Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)".
- Compare the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) displayed on the diagnostic tester and the display on turbocharger tester with each other.
Specified value: The pressures must match (Tolerance ±30 mbar or 3 kPaA)

NOTE:
- The turbocharger tester is required to obtain an independent comparison value. Turbocharger tester must be set to measuring range I (absolute pressure). A barometer can also be used in its place.
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) is displayed in kPaA on the diagnostic tester, in mbar on the turbocharger tester Conversion: 1 mbar = 0.1 kPaA.

If specified value is not obtained:
- End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
- Check wires according to wiring diagram.

Checking wiring
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness, connect test box for wiring test. Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test
- Remove right main headlight:
- Disconnect 4-pin connector from Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor -G71- with Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor -G72-, item no. 21 , Overview of component locations.

Vehicles with 80-pin control module

- Check for open circuit in wires between test box and connector according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 3 + socket 39
Terminal 4 + socket 40
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohm

Vehicles with 121-pin control module

- Check for open circuit in wires between test box and connector according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 3 + socket 31
Terminal 4 + socket 71
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohm

Continuation for all vehicles

- Also check wires for short circuit to each other, to vehicle Ground (GND) and to B+.
Specified value: Infinite Ohm

If no malfunctions are detected in wires:
- Replace Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248- Service and Repair
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
RENDER: 1.0x

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
