Special tools and equipment
- VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST)
Note: If VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) is not available, use VAG1552 Mobile Scan Tool (ST) instead, although this tool cannot produce a print-out.
- VAG1 551/3B cable
Test requirements
- All fuses must be OK.
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
- Parking brake must be engaged or else daylight driving lights will be switched on.
- For vehicles with automatic transmission, selector lever must be in -P- or-N-.
- All electrical consumers like, for example, lights and rear window heating must be switched off.
- Coolant temperature must be at least 80 °C, -Display group 04, display field 3
Note: This diagnostic can only be completed if the diagnostic of oxygen sensor aging has already been performed successfully.
Procedure
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Then start engine and let run at idle. Select "address word" 01 for Engine Control Module (ECM). Connecting scan tool and selecting Engine Control Module (ECM):
Refer to Powertrain Management for General information for On Board Diagnostic (OBD): Connecting VAG1551 and selecting control module for engine electronics.
- Check DTC memory, repair malfunctions if necessary and then erase DTC memory:
- If DTC memory was erased, readiness code must be re-generated
- Then:
- Connect Scan Tool (ST) VAG1551
Indicated on display:
- Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function 04. Press -Q- button to confirm Input.
Indicated on display:
- Press buttons 7-, -7- and -0- to select "Display group number 77". Press -Q- button to confirm input.
Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = display fields)
If diagnostic is initiated by the Engine Control Module (ECM), the indication in display field 4 will jump from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Let engine continue to run at idle until the result of the diagnostic test is indicated in display field 4: Specification: "Syst. OK"
If indications resemble description:
- Press - button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06. Press -Q- button to confirm input.
If indications do not resemble description:
- Check DTC memory, repair malfunctions if necessary and then erase DTC memory.
- If DTC memory was erased or the Engine Control Module (ECM) was disconnected from the continuous B+ supply, the readiness code must be re-generated
- Repeat test.
If indication still does not resemble description:
- Check combination valve.
- Check activation of the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor
- Check Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve
