Front wheel toe, setting





Set toe at the left and right wheel with the tie rod length adjustment -A-.
Refer to Specifications.

Note: Ensure that the boot is not twisted or damaged. If the boot is turned, loosen the clip and then replace it with a new clip.

- Tighten locknut -B- to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and once again check toe-in.

Note: After setting front wheel toe and tightening the lock nut, it is normal for the reading not to correspond exactly to the setting made previously in the unladen position. The setting is correct provided the wheel toe measured is within the setting tolerance.

Front wheel raised toe, setting
The front wheel raised toe measurement is determined from the wheel toe measured in the unladen position, and the wheel toe measured with the wheel raised 60 mm from the unladen position.
Special tools VAG 1925, VAG 1925/4 and VAG 1925/6 are required for this procedure.

Note: The front wheel raised toe must be checked if:





^ The swing arm/tie rod connection (-A- and -B-) has been loosened.
^ Axle components and/or the body have been damaged in an accident.
^ The vehicle does not steer properly when travailing over uneven surfaces and when braking





- Attach special tool VAG 1925 with adapter VAG 1925/4 to front subframe bolts on both sides (arrow).

Note: If there are clearance problems when adjusting the special tool VAG 1925, do not attach adapters VAG 1925/4 and VAG 1925/6 until later.





- Unscrew both threaded spindles just enough so they touch front subframe bolts.
- Position axle lift at front jacking points and jack up vehicle about 70 mm (2-3/4 inch).

Note: When the vehicle is jacked up, the wheels must not lose contact with the turntables.





- Push cylinder up out of threaded spindles and secure with locking rod.

Note: Ensure that locking rods are positioned correctly and are properly inserted.

- Lower vehicle onto adapters VAG 1925/4 and VAG 1925/6.
- Check specification.

Note:
^ Add 1% to the toe-in value (setting value) of the left-hand wheel measured in the unladen position and compare with the toe-in reading indicated. Correct toe-in of the left wheel if necessary.
^ Add 1% to the toe-in value (setting value) of the right-hand wheel measured in the unladen position and compare with the toe-in reading indicated. Correct toe-in of the right wheel if necessary

Example
Actual toe-in measured in unladen position (setting value): +7°
Wheel toe correction (constant): +12°
Total: +19°

Toe-in with the vehicle in the raised position is therefore +19°± 2° at the wheel in question.





- Loosen clamping bolt-A-.
- Unscrew adjusting bolt -B- by approx. 4 mm (5/32 inch) and push tie rod joint down as far as stop.
- Screw in adjusting bolt -B- far enough so that calculated specified value is achieved.
- Tighten clamping bolt -A- to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) and check reading.
- Tighten adjusting bolt -B- to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.).
- After vehicle is again in unladen position, bounce springs several times.

Note: The figure that applies for the subsequent check of toe-in in the unladen position is the checking value.
