Power steering system, assembly overview (Vehicles with 6-cyl. engine)
If the power steering system is malfunctioning determine the cause using pressure tests and leakage tests. If a malfunction exists, then replace the faulty component.

Notes:
^ If reservoir fluid level is low then check steering system for leaks.
^ If leaks occur at line connections first tighten connections, then wipe dry and recheck for leaks.
^ Pumps supplied as replacement parts are not filled with fluid. The pump must be filled with hydraulic fluid, Part No. G 002 000 and rotated by hand or the pump may become damaged or noisy during operation.
^ Type of fluid: Part No. G 002 000
^ System capacity: 0.7 - 0.9 liter (0.74 - 0.95 qt.)

^ Tighten with VAG 1275
^ Always replace
16. Suction hose
17. 8 Nm (70 inch lbs.)
18. Retainer
^ Bolted to cylinder head

^ Tighten with VAG 1275

^ 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
21. oil seal
^ Always replace

23. Power steering pump
^ Fill with oil before installing
24. Banjo bolt
^ 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
25. Pressure line
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
- Start thread onto pressure hose, and counter-hold on pressure hose hex when tightening.
^ Bolted to intake pipe with -item 26-.
26. 8 Nm (70 inch lbs.)
27. Bracket
28. 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
