Radio Frequency Remote Control Functions Only at Close Range

Condition
Radio frequency remote control functions only at close range.
May be caused by missing radio frequency remote control antenna wire on vehicles up to and including VIN: 3VWRC29M0XM043029.
Service
If radio frequency remote control antenna wire is not installed. Install antenna wire Part No: 1JM 970 228 as follows:
- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap before working on the electrical system.
Note:
Obtain radio code before disconnecting battery.

Locate Comfort system Electronic Control Module (ECM) next to steering column.
Comfort System ECM, accessing

- Remove two screws (1).
- Unclip top of trim (2).
- Remove two screws (3).
- Unclip top of trim (4).
- Remove screws from Data Link Connector (DLC).

- Remove six screws.
- Remove sound damper panel (1).

- Remove two ECM fastening screws (arrows).
- Remove brown 15 pin connector from ECM.
Antenna wire, installing

- Install antenna Part No: 1JM 970 228 into brown 15 pin connector.
CAUTION!
Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Dept. for the latest parts in formation.

- Insert antenna ground terminal (wire with smaller terminal) into cavity 7 of control module connector.
- Insert antenna positive terminal (wire with larger terminal) into cavity 10 of control module connector.
- Route and secure antenna to ECM harness using electrical tape.

- Route antenna along body cross member and attach using two plastic tie straps (arrows) Part No: N 020 902 2 to the two bands around the cross member as shown.
Install ECM, sound damper panel and trim in reverse order of removal.
WARNING!
Ensure that there is no person inside the vehicle when connecting battery ground strap.
- Connect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Connect VAG 1551 ScanTool.
- Check all systems for stored DTC's.
- Erase any stored DTC's.
Perform the following as necessary:
- Set Climatronic, power window, and power seat adaptation per Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual.
- Set engine basic settings (Electronic Throttle Control Adaptation).
- Set transmission basic settings.
- Set readiness code.
- Set clock, radio anti-theft code and program radio station presets.
When procedure applies to vehicles within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, use the following:
