J. Check basic engine adjustment

- Using Engine Scan Tool VAG 1551, check basic engine adjustments:
- Let engine run at idle for approx. 10 minutes.
- Go to engine scan tool and press 1 button to select "Rapid Data Transfer" mode.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select "Engine Electronics".
- Press Q button to enter input.
- Press (arrow) button.
- Press 0 and 8 buttons read measuring value block.
- Press 0 button twice and press Q button.
- Observe channel 7.
^ display value must be between 128 and 178
^ If YES, no adjustments are necessary, disconnect scan tool and proceed to Step L
^ If NO, continue on next page
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Leave Engine Scan Tool VAG 1551 connected.
- Ensure that all electrical consumers are switched OFF.

- Connect engine tester VAG 1367, using inductive pickup VAG 1367/8.

- Connect CO tester SUN 105 (or EPA approved equivalent), using adaptor hose VAG 1363/3 on CO tap tube.
Note
Adaptor must be connected tightly to CO tap tube to prevent measuring errors.
- Start engine and let idle.
- Go to engine scan tool and press 1 button to select "Rapid Data Transfer" mode.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select "Engine Electronics".
- Press Q button to enter input.
- Press (arrow) button.
- Press 0 and 4 buttons to select "Engine Basic Adjustment" function.

- Press Q button to enter input.
^ display will appear as shown
- Press Q button twice to display "Group 09".
^ display will appear as shown
- Press Q button to enter input.
Note
^ The display channel values are in decimal form.
^ 2000 is the maximum number of RPM that can be displayed in this setting.
^ When this function is selected, the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve is switched OFF and the EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Valve is CLOSED
- Observe channel 9 of display.
^ display value must be 5
^ If value other than 5 is displayed
- Check if A/C is switched OFF
- Check "Closed Throttle Position (CTP) switch.
- Check ignition timing.
^ check value must be 4 to 8 BTDC
^ If NO
- Adjust ignition timing by loosening ignition distributor and turning it until adjustment is correct.
- Using Engine Scan Tool VAG 1551, check basic engine adjustments:
- Let engine run at idle for approx. 10 minutes.
- Go to engine scan tool and press 1 button to select "Rapid Data Transfer" mode.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select "Engine Electronics".
- Press Q button to enter input.
- Press (arrow) button.
- Press 0 and 8 buttons read measuring value block.
- Press 0 button twice and press Q button.
- Observe channel 7.
^ display value must be between 128 and 178
^ If YES, no adjustments are necessary, disconnect scan tool and proceed to Step L
