Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair
1990 Subaru XT-6 4WD L6-2.7L SOHCSECTION Service and Repair
EXCEPT 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove hand brake cover and center console.
3. Disconnect indicator light and neutral safety switch electrical connections.
4. Remove selector lever assembly retaining screws and lever assembly.
5. Remove safety switch retaining screws and switch from the selector lever assembly.
6. Reverse procedure to install.
4-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Detach cable from select lever.
3. Remove three inhibitor switch to transmission retaining bolts.
4. Disconnect switch electrical connector and remove inhibitor switch.
5. Install new inhibitor switch and lightly install retaining bolts.
6. Adjust switch as follows:
a. Ensure select lever is set in the N position.
b. Insert stopper pin, tool No. 499267300, into the inhibitor switch lever and switch body.
c. Torque retaining bolts to 3 ft. lbs., then remove the stopper pin.
d. Attach cable to select lever, then check for proper operation.

5. Remove safety switch retaining screws and switch from the selector lever assembly.
6. Reverse procedure to install.
4-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Detach cable from select lever.
3. Remove three inhibitor switch to transmission retaining bolts.
4. Disconnect switch electrical connector and remove inhibitor switch.
5. Install new inhibitor switch and lightly install retaining bolts.
6. Adjust switch as follows:
a. Ensure select lever is set in the N position.
b. Insert stopper pin, tool No. 499267300, into the inhibitor switch lever and switch body.
c. Torque retaining bolts to 3 ft. lbs., then remove the stopper pin.
d. Attach cable to select lever, then check for proper operation.
