Brief Description
The purpose of the cruise control system is to keep the car travelling at a constant speed selected by the driver without the driver having to use the accelerator. Engagement of the system is by means of a switch on the control stalk for the direction indicators and headlamps. The system is disengaged automatically when either the brake or clutch pedal is depressed, by moving the switch to OFF or CANCEL or when the selector lever on cars with automatic transmission is in position N.
The cruise control system consists of the following components and signals:
- Control module
- Switch
- Pedal switches, brake and clutch
- Brake lights switch
- Main instrument unit
- Vehicle speed signal from the ABS control module
- Cruise control active, to engine management system
On cars equipped with the Trionic engine management system, the Trionic control module receives a signal from the cruise control module on terminal J (9) informing it that the cruise control system is active.
This results in smoother control of the car's speed, as boost pressure is limited to the basic charging pressure.
On cars with automatic transmission, the cruise control system is supplied with current from fuse 17 via the idle speed increase switch in the gear position sensor and also from fuse 22. This means that the system is operative when the selector lever is in any of the drive positions (D, 3, 2,1).
The cruise control system is inoperative at speeds below 32 km/h (20 mph) or above 220 km/h (137 mph).
