Effective with the 1987 model year, the GM Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) format will be modified for all Pontiac Carlines. The changes will be made to VIN position #6 and #7 which displayed the passenger car body style in 1986.

Commencing with 1987 start of production, a one (1) position numeric code in the 6th position will identify the body style as defined below:

CODE DEFINITION BODY STYLE

1 Two door coupe/sedan 27,37,97
2 Two door hatchback 08,77,87
3 Two door convertible 67
5 Four door sedan 19,69
6 Four door hatchback 68
8 Four door station wagon 35

The 7th position of the passenger car VIN will define the restraint system. For 1987 the following are applicable:

CODE DEFINITION

1 Manual belts
4 Automatic belts (Passive Restraints)

This change will be made since additional restraint systems will be introduced beginning with the 1987 model year.
