Headlight Time Delay Feature Inoperative

2000 Plymouth Breeze 2.0 C, Standard, A578SECTION Headlight Time Delay Feature Inoperative
  1. Connect scan tool to DLC. DLC is located above hood release handle on driver's kick panel. Select BODY CONTROL MODULE on scan tool. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, go to BATTERY POWER TO MODULE DISCONNECT; IGNITION VOLTAGE TOO LOW; NO RESPONSE FROM BCM (BAT PWR DISCON'D); BATTERY POWER TO MODULE  under COMMUNICATIONS. If scan tool displays CCD BUS FAILURE, go to appropriate bus failure procedure under COMMUNICATIONS . If neither message is displayed, go to next step.
  2. Select INPUT/OUTPUT on scan tool. Display IGN RUN/START state. If scan tool does not indicate OPEN, go to next step. If scan tool indicates OPEN, go to BATTERY POWER TO MODULE DISCONNECT; IGNITION VOLTAGE TOO LOW; NO RESPONSE FROM BCM (BAT PWR DISCON'D); BATTERY POWER TO MODULE  under COMMUNICATIONS.
  3. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate headlight relay. If headlights toggle on and off, stop actuation of headlight relay and go to next step. If headlights do not toggle on and off, stop actuation of headlight relay and go to step  6.
  4. Turn headlight switch to ON position. Using scan tool, read low beam sense status. Turn headlight switch OFF, and then to ON position. If scan tool displays LOW BEAM SENSE: OFF and then LOW BEAM SENSE: ON, go to next step. If scan tool display does not match headlight switch positions, replace junction block.
  5. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Turn ignition on. Replace headlight delay relay with known good relay. See Figure. Using scan tool, actuate headlight relay. If headlights toggle on and off, stop actuation of headlight relay and replace relay. If headlights do not toggle on and off, stop actuation of headlight relay and go to next step.
  7. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 on headlight delay relay socket. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace junction block.
  8. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 3 on headlight delay relay socket. See Figure. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace junction block.
  9. Connect a jumper wire between terminals No. 1 and 5 on headlight delay relay socket. See Figure. If headlights illuminate, go to next step. If headlights do not illuminate, replace junction block.
  10. Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
