Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair

1993 Plymouth Laser FWD L4-1753cc 1.8L SOHCSECTION Service and Repair

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Location:

Cautions:
1. When loosening a Phillips screw which has been firmly tightened, use a Phillips screwdriver that is an exact fit for the screw.
2. Do not remove the throttle valve.
3. Be careful when removing the throttle position sensor screw as it has been coated with adhesive.

Removal
1. Disconnect the harness connector.
2. Remove the connector from the bracket.
3. Remove the two phillips head screws.
4. Remove the sensor.

Installation
1. Install the sensor.
2. Install the two phillips head screws.
3. Connect the harness connector.
4. Install the connector in the bracket.
5. Adjust to obtain the proper alignment setting.

Throttle Position Sensor Adjustment

Note: Before attempting to adjust the Throttle Sensor, make certain the idle speed and ignition timing are correctly adjusted. See the appropriate section for the proper procedures.

1. Verify the following conditions:
a. Engine fully warmed up. (185-205~F deg)
b. All lights, engine cooling fan and accessories "off".
c. Transmission in P or N.
d. Steering wheel in the straight ahead position (models with power steering only)

Accelerator Cable Adjustment Bolts:

2. Verify that the throttle cable has enough slack that it is not holding the throttle open in any way. Loosen the adjustment bolts for the throttle cable if necessary.

TPS Circuit:

3. Using a high-impedance digital voltmeter, carefully back probe the throttle position connector into terminals #2 and #4. Refer to the connector in the image.
4. Turn the key to the ON position.
5. Check the output voltage.

Voltage
0.48 - 0.52 volts

If the voltage is not as specified, adjust the TPS by loosening the mounting screws and rotating the sensor.

Note: Clockwise rotation of the sensor increases the voltage output while counter-clockwise rotation reduces voltage.

6. Tighten the sensor set screws securely.

Torque Spec
1.1 - 1.8 ft lb (1.5 - 2.5 Nm)

7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
8. Disconnect the battery for at least ten seconds to clear any stored trouble codes.
9. If the throttle cable was previously loosened, return the cable to the proper adjustment.
