When ignition switch is turned to RUN position, SDM performs tests to diagnose critical internal malfunctions. SDM provides input power to Side Impact Sensor (SIS). SIS performs internal diagnostics, then sends an ID message to SDM. SDM receives ID message within 5 seconds of power being turned on and determines if message is valid. SIS continually communicates a status message to SDM. SDM can reset SIS by removing and reapplying power to SIS.
