Diagnostic Procedures

2004 Oldsmobile Bravada AWDSECTION Diagnostic Procedures
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, monitor TP SENSOR 1. If reading is less than 0.25 volts, go to next step. If reading is more than 4.67 volts, go to step  6 . If voltage is 0.25-4.67 volts, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  2. Disconnect throttle body connector. Jumper throttle body connector terminals "A" (Dark Green wire) and "C" (Gray wire). If reading is not above 4.8 volts, go to next step. If reading is above 4.8 volts, check throttle body connector. If connector is okay, replace throttle body.
  3. Remove jumper wire. Using DVOM, measure voltage at throttle body connector terminal "C" (Gray wire). If 4-6 volts are present, go to next step. If 4-6 volts are not present, go to step  5 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM connector J2. check continuity between throttle body connector terminal "A" (Dark Green wire) and ground. Check continuity between throttle body connector terminals "A" (Dark Green wire) and "G" (Black wire). If continuity exists in either test, repair Dark Green wire shorted to ground or to Black wire. If continuity does not exist, check Dark Green wire between ECM and throttle body for open. If wire is okay, replace ECM.
  5. Using scan tool, monitor A/C PRESSURE SENSOR, FTP SENSOR and APP 2 SENSOR. If all 3 readings are less than 0.2 volt, see DTC P1635: 5-VOLT REFERENCE 1 CIRCUIT  . If all 3 readings are not less than 0.2 volt, check Gray wire between ECM and throttle body for open. If wire is okay, replace ECM.
  6. Turn ignition on, engine off. Disconnect throttle body connector. Is reading less than 0.25 volt, go to step  8 . If reading is not less than 0.25 volt, go to next step.
  7. Using DVOM, measure voltage at throttle body connector terminal "A" (Dark Green wire). If 4-6 volts are present, repair Dark Green wire shorted to either the Gray wire or the Light Blue/Black wire, between ECM and throttle body. If 4-6 volts are not present, repair short to voltage in Dark Green wire between ECM and throttle body.
  8. Using DVOM, measure voltage between throttle body connector terminals "C" (Gray wire) and "G" (Black wire). If 4-6 volts are present, replace throttle body. If 4-6 volts are not present, go to next step.
  9. If voltage is more than 6 volts, 5-volt reference is shorted to voltage. See DTC P1635: 5-VOLT REFERENCE 1 CIRCUIT  . If voltage is not more than 6 volts, check for open in Black wire between ECM and throttle body. If wire is okay, replace ECM.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
