Control Assembly: Description and Operation

1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88 V6-231 3.8LSECTION Description and Operation

Control Panel:

The control panel, Fig. 1, permits system control by means of a selector lever, a temperature control lever and a fan switch.

The selector panel permits selection of mode of operation (OFF, MAX, NORM, BI-LEVEL, VENT, HEATER, DEFROST) by positioning a master (select) electrical switch and a vacuum select valve. The vacuum select valve controls flow of hot water to the heater core and applies vacuum to or vents the vacuum diaphragms which control the movement of the air valves in the heater case and the air inlet assembly. The select (electrical) switch position controls the compressor and also provides power to the fan switch.

The temperature lever selects the desired comfort level (65-70-75-80-85) by positioning a cam on the control panel. The cam operates a bowden cable which references the programmer assembly. The programmer assembly then controls the heater case temperature valve to regulate air outlet temperature to maintain the selected comfort level.

The fan switch permits selection of four blower speeds.
