TROUBLESHOOTING ON STEERING

Fault Cause Remedy
Excessive steering wheel play/steering wheel shake. Screws at lower section of steering spindle to steering gear/steering column loose. Replace screws and tighten down (refer to STEERING SPINDLE LOWER SECTION ).
Bolt connection, universal joint/double joint, to lower section of steering spindle/steering gear/steering column loose. Replace and tighten down bolts (refer to... Double joint / universal joint).
Journal of tie rod end deformed. Replace steering gear and tie rod ends. Refer to 32 13 060 REMOVING AND INSTALLING / REPLACING POWER STEERING GEAR  and 32 21 151 REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT TIE ROD .
Tie rod end worn. Check steering gear rack; if necessary, replace steering gear. Refer to 32 13 060 REMOVING AND INSTALLING / REPLACING POWER STEERING GEAR  and 32 21 151 REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT TIE ROD .
Check tie rods, replace if necessary. Refer to 32 21 231 REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT TIE ROD .
Replace tie rod end. Refer to 32 21 151 REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT TIE ROD .
Steering gear rack damaged. Replace steering gear. Refer to 32 13 060 REMOVING AND INSTALLING / REPLACING POWER STEERING GEAR  and 32 21 151 REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT TIE ROD .
Refer to TROUBLE SHOOTING .
Steering wheel inclination. Tie rod end worn. Replace tie rod end. Refer to 32 21 151 REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT TIE ROD .
Front axle alignment incorrectly adjusted. Carry out chassis/wheel alignment check, adjust toe/track if necessary. Refer to 32 00 150 STANDARD CHASSIS / WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH DIN LOAD  and 32 00 155 CHASSIS / WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITHOUT LOAD .
