Positive Overlap

If positive overlap occurs, the engaging clutch takes over too early or the releasing clutch pressure drops too late. The gear set would become momentarily blocked if this condition occurs during an upshift. When this occurs the ratio of the gear set becomes 1:1 momentarily. The result is a loss in drive torque during a gear shift. See Fig 1.
