The crankcase is a one-piece "open deck" design and is made entirely from AluSil. In mass production, the cylinder bores are finished by an etching procedure. This involves etching out a thin aluminum layer from the cylinder walls. By doing this, the high strength silicon crystals are exposed. The silicon crystals form a high strength running surface for the pistons.
