Description and Instructions
1996 Lincoln Continental V8-4.6L DOHCSECTION Description and Instructions
DESCRIPTION
The Output Test Mode (OTM) aids in servicing actuators associated with the PCM. It allows the technician to energize and de-energize most of the system output actuators on command. When entering OTM, the outputs can be turned off and on without controlling the cooling fans. The low and high speed cooling fans may be turned on separately without energizing the other outputs.
As a safety precaution, Output Test Mode will default to its normal state after 10 minutes, after the vehicle is started or after cycling the ignition switch OFF then ON.
CAUTION
Safety must be observed when using Output Test Mode:
- When all outputs are on, the electric fuel pump is energized, make sure fuel system in intact and is not being serviced at this time.
- When low speed or high speed cooling tans are turned on, make sure fan blades are clear of any obstruction.
GENERIC SCAN TOOL IN ENHANCED DIAGNOSTIC MODE
A string of characters must be entered into the generic scan tool to perform Output Test Mode. The generic keystroke entry for this specific function is provided below. Also, refer to the scan tool manufacturer's instructions for additional information.
ACCESSING OUTPUT TEST MODE
Output Test Mode has four separate forms to enter:
ALL OUTPUTS ON (EXCEPT COOLING FANS)
ALL OUTPUTS OFF
LOW SPEED COOLING FAN ON/OFF
HIGH SPEED COOLING FAN ON/OFF
Refer to scan tool manufacturer's manual for specific information on which cables to use or how to manually enter character strings for the following examples.
- Perform the necessary safety precautions and visual inspection.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Turn ignition key to the ON position.
- Verify tool is connected and communicating properly by entering the OBD II System Readiness Test.
- Enter the strings separately and in the order shown:
