Camshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair

1996 Lincoln Continental V8-4.6L DOHCSECTION Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected or reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.

2. Partially drain cooling system.
3. Remove upper radiator hose from water bypass tube and position water bypass tube out of the way.
4. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
5. Remove CMP sensor retaining screw and sensor from engine front cover.

INSTALLATION
1. Make sure CMP sensor mounting surface is clean and sensor O-ring is properly located on CMP sensor.
2. Position camshaft position sensor and install retaining screw. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb in).

CAUTION: Do not overtighten CMP sensor retaining screw or possible damage to CMP sensor may occur.

3. Connect engine control sensor wiring to CMP sensor.
4. Install upper radiator hose onto the water bypass tube. Properly position hose clamp on the upper radiator hose.
5. Fill and bleed engine cooling system.
6. Connect battery ground cable.
