IDLE CONTROLLER (A/C)

Description
The idle controller keeps the idle speed from dropping when the compressor is running. An idle controller operated by the manifold vacuum is attached to the throttle linkage. Vacuum is controlled by an idle control solenoid valve that is energized when the A/C switch is on and compressor clutch is energized.
When the A/C is off or the compressor is not running, the idle control solenoid valve is de-energized and the vacuum in the idle controller is relieved through the air filter on the idle control solenoid valve.
Testing
If the idle controller does not operate with the air conditioner on, disconnect the hose from the idle controller and check for vacuum.
- If there is vacuum, replace the idle controller.
- If there is no vacuum, check for voltage at the idle control solenoid valve.
- If there is no voltage, check the wiring and control unit
- If there is voltage, disconnect the hose routed to the intake manifold at the idle control solenoid valve and check for vacuum.
- If there is vacuum, replace the idle control solenoid valve.
- If there is no vacuum, check the vacuum line to the intake manifold.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
