Removal
WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer's specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury.
WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label. For EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION seek medical advice. In the USA or Canada on Ford/Motorcraft products call: 1-800-959-3673. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
WARNING: Always install new brake shoes or pads at both ends of an axle to reduce the possibility of brakes pulling vehicle to one side. Failure to follow this instruction may result in uneven braking and serious personal injury.
NOTICE: Do not spill brake fluid on painted or plastic surfaces or damage to the surface may occur. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash the surface with water.
1. Check the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
- If required, remove the fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full.
2. Remove the wheel and tire.
3. Using a C-clamp, compress the pistons into the caliper housing.
4. NOTICE: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose may occur.
Remove the 2 brake caliper guide pin bolts and position the caliper aside.
- Support the caliper using mechanic's wire.
5. Remove the 2 brake pads, spring clips and wire spreader springs (if equipped) from the brake caliper anchor plate.
- Discard the spring clips and wire spreader springs (if equipped).
6. Inspect the brake caliper for leaks or damage. Install a new brake caliper if required.
7. Inspect the brake caliper anchor plate. Install a new brake caliper anchor plate if required.
- Inspect the guide pins and boots for binding or damage. Install new as necessary.
Installation
1. NOTICE: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the pad lining material, or damage to components may occur. Do not install contaminated pads.
NOTE: If installing new brake pads, make sure to install all new hardware and specified lubricant (8U7Z-19A506-A) supplied with the brake pad kit. Refer to the brake pad instruction sheet when applying lubricant.
Install the new spring clips and brake pads to the brake caliper anchor plate.
- Apply equal amounts of specified lubricant to the brake caliper-to-brake pad contact points as directed. Install the brake pads to the brake caliper anchor plate.
2. NOTE: The coil in the center of the wire spreader spring must lie against the anchor plate and must not be in the raised position. If the coil in the center of the wire spreader spring does not rest against the caliper anchor plate, the spring is installed incorrectly and must be repositioned.
Insert ends of wire spreader springs into holes in pad pressure plates.
3. NOTICE: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the pad lining material, or damage to components may occur. Do not install contaminated pads.
NOTE: If reusing the existing brake pads, be sure to apply equal amounts of the specified lubricant (8U7Z-19A506-A) to the caliper-to-brake pad contact points.
NOTE: Do not grease or lubricate the brake pad spring clips.
Install the spring clips and brake pads to the brake caliper anchor plate.
4. NOTE: The coil in the center of the wire spreader spring must lie against the anchor plate and must not be in the raised position. If the coil in the center of the wire spreader spring does not rest against the caliper anchor plate, the spring is installed incorrectly and must be repositioned.
Insert the ends of wire spreader spring into holes in pad pressure plates (if equipped).
5. NOTICE: Make sure the caliper pin boots are correctly seated to prevent corrosion to the guide pins.
NOTICE: Make sure that the brake hose is not twisted when the caliper is positioned on the anchor plate to prevent abrasive damage.
Position the brake caliper onto the brake caliper anchor plate and install the 2 brake caliper guide pin bolts.
- Tighten to 72 Nm (53 lb-ft).
6. Install the wheel and tire.
7. If necessary, fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with clean, specified brake fluid.
- Apply brakes several times to verify correct brake operation.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
