FORD:
1998-1999 F-150
ISSUE
Induction backfire on accelerations and decelerations during all ambient temperatures may occur on some vehicles. This may be caused by carbon buildup on the intake valves due to high sulfur content in the gasoline and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.
ACTION
Reprogram the PCM. If the backfire concern has not been resolved, perform normal diagnostics. Be sure to perform intake valve deposit inspection procedure (carbon blasting with walnut shells) or replace the intake valves with new Intake Valves (F65Z-6507-AA).

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
