Throttle Position Sensor: Adjustments

1994 Eagle Summit Wagon AWD L4-1795cc 1.8L SOHCSECTION Adjustments
1. Verify the following conditions:
a. Engine fully warmed up. (185-205° F)
b. All lights, engine cooling fan and accessories "OFF".
c. Transmission in P or N.
d. Steering wheel in the straight ahead position (models with power steering only).

Closed Throttle (Idle) Position Switch Circuit:

Closed Throttle Position Switch
1. Verify that the throttle cable has enough slack that it is not holding the throttle open in any way. Loosen the adjustment bolts for the throttle cable if necessary.

Closed Throttle (Idle) Position Switch Testing:

2. Disconnect the harness connector and connect an ohmmeter to the closed throttle position switch connector terminals #1 and #2. Refer to the connector in the image.

Using Feeler Gauge To Position Throttle Sensor:

5. Insert a 0.656 mm (0.0256 in.) feeler gauge between the speed adjusting screw (SAS) and throttle lever.

Adjusting Throttle Sensor:

6. Loosen throttle position sensor mounting bolts and turn the sensor fully clockwise.

Adjusting Throttle Sensor:

7. Check for continuity between terminals 1 and 2.
8. Turn the sensor counter clockwise until there is no continuity. Tighten the sensor set screws securely.

Torque Spec 1.5 - 2.5 Nm (1.1 - 1.8 Ft lbs)

9. Connect the harness connector.

TPS Circuit:

Throttle Position Sensor
1. Verify that the throttle cable has enough slack that it is not holding the throttle open in any way. Loosen the adjustment bolts for the throttle cable if necessary.

Using Feeler Gauge To Position Throttle Sensor:

2. Insert a 0.656 mm (0.0256 in.) feeler gauge between the SAS screw and throttle lever.

Measuring Tps Voltage:

3. Using a high-impedance digital voltmeter, carefully back probe the throttle position connector into terminals #1 (sensor ground) and #3. (sensor output) Refer to the connector in the image.
4. Turn the key to the ON position.
5. Check the output voltage.

Voltage 0.40 - 1.00 volts

6. If the voltage is not as specified, check the sensor and harness.
7. Remove feeler gauge.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
