CAUTION:
The EPROM is serviceable in some applications and can be removed for replacement. If the COMPUTER is found to be defective and needs replacement, remove the old EPROM if applicable and place into the new computer. When replacing the COMPUTER always transfer the BROADCAST CODE and PRODUCTION ECM/PCM NUMBER to the service label on the replacement computer.
DESCRIPTION:
The term EPROM means Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM). The EPROM functions in the same manner as a regular PROM and is programmed with data pertaining to the vehicles weight, engine, transmission, axle ratio etc. Automotive technicians do not ERASE or PROGRAM the EPROM in the field. Instead, the EPROM is serviced in one of two manners. Some applications are soldered to the circuit board and require both the computer and EPROM to be replaced as a complete unit. Other applications allow for the EPROM only to replaced.
