Gear Select (PRNDL) Switch:
PURPOSE
The gear select (or transmission range) switch indicates to the PCM which position the transmission shift lever is in. The PCM uses this input to determine when and how to control the shift solenoids inside the transmission.

OPERATION
The gear select switch actually contains four switches. The PCM detects the desired gear range by monitoring which combination of switches is "ON" or "OFF" (see illustration.)
