Idle Speed: Adjustments

NOTE: Refer to Diesel Engine Performance Specifications chart for specified curb and fast idle speeds.

CURB IDLE SPEED ADJUST
1. Set parking brake, then block drive wheels.
2. Position transmission shift lever in Neutral, then connect suitable tachometer following tool manufacturer's instructions.

3. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
4. Loosen idle speed adjusting screw locknut, then turn adjusting screw inward or outward until specified curb idle speed is obtained, Fig. 4.
5. Tighten locknut, stop engine and disconnect tachometer from engine.

FAST IDLE SPEED ADJUST
1. Set parking brake, then block drive wheels.
2. Position transmission shift lever in Neutral, then connect tachometer following tool manufacturer's instructions.
3. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
4. Apply vacuum to fast idle actuator, then loosen fast idle adjusting screw locknut, Fig. 4.
5. Turn knurled adjusting nut inward or outward and set fast idle speed to specification.
6. Tighten locknut, stop engine and disconnect tachometer from engine.
