PURPOSE
The BMW service tester and other diagnostic equipment communicate with the Digital Motor Electronic (DME) and other control units through the diagnostic Link.
OPERATION
This two-wire link, is used for diagnostic purposes and has no function during normal vehicle operation.
Diagnostic equipment and the DME control unit communicate through digital signals. The DME control unit has a numerical "address" which differentiates it from other control units and systems on the vehicle. When the control unit is called, it replies to the service tester that it is functioning. After the link has been made, diagnostic programs may be conducted with the BMW service tester or MoDIC.
