ZVM Overview:

ZKE IV Overview:

The E36 and Z3 roadster use two different control modules for the body electronics control depending on the model year.

The Central Locking Module (ZVM) was introduced with the E36 as a 1992 model and the Central Body Electronics (ZKE IV) was introduced with the E36 IC convertible as a 1994 model in May of 1993.
- The balance of the 1994 models received the ZKE IV system with their introduction in September of 1993.
- The 1996 Z3 roadster was introduced with the ZVM and for the 1997 model year it was changed to the ZKE IV control.

The basic difference between the two is that the ZKE IV system has expanded control functions and features.

The Central Locking module (ZVM) controls the following circuits:
- Interior Lighting (IB)
- Central Locking (ZV/ZS)
- Door Lock Heating (if equipped) TSH
- Output Relay for the Power Windows/Sunroof (FH/SHD)
- Electronic (overload) Power Protection


NOTE: The 1992 model year introduced the E36 Coupe used which continued to use the ZVM control but added the feature of One-Touch power windows through the use of separate modules mounted on the door glass motor. At the same time the 4 door had it installed on the driver's door only.


The ZKE IV control added the following features to the body electronics control:
- Full Power Window control integrated into the ZKE (The separate door modules were deleted).
- Relay Module IV was added as a component to control rear windows.
- EWS Interfaces starting with the drive away protection circuit in 9-93 (see Drive away Protection Systems handout.)
- Interior Central Lock button when introduced (12-95 production)
- Consumer Cutout Sleep Mode
