2017 BMW X3 — What You Need to Know

  • N52 is a 6-cylinder engine — you need 6 plugs. Don't confuse with 4-cylinder N46 models
  • BMW recommends NGK ILZKBR7B8DG (part# 90941) iridium — do not substitute with standard copper plugs
  • Iridium plugs are pre-gapped from the factory. Do NOT use a gap tool on them
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize to plug threads if reinstalling into aluminum head (not needed for new plugs which are pre-coated)
Torque Specs

Spark plugs: 20-22 ft-lbs | Coil bolts: 7 ft-lbs

Safety Warnings

  • Do NOT re-gap iridium spark plugs — adjusting the gap damages the iridium tip
  • COP (coil-on-plug) ignition — each plug has its own coil held by one 10mm bolt
  • Work on a COLD engine only — aluminum heads make it very easy to strip hot threads

Tools Required

5/8" spark plug socket
Torque wrench
Extension (6" and 12")
10mm socket for coil bolts

Basic Procedure Overview

  1. 1Remove engine cover (plastic clips or 10mm bolts depending on year)
  2. 2Disconnect each ignition coil: unplug electrical connector, remove 10mm bolt, pull coil straight up
  3. 3Remove spark plug with 5/8" socket and extension — break loose with a firm, straight pull
  4. 4Thread new NGK iridium plug in by hand (never use power tools to start threading)
  5. 5Torque to 20-22 ft-lbs — do not exceed as aluminum threads strip easily
  6. 6Reinstall coil (note: apply dielectric grease to inside of coil boot before installing)
  7. 7Reconnect coil connector until it clicks, replace coil bolt to 7 ft-lbs
