With Manufacturer's Scan Tool

2003 Volkswagen Golf (1J1) L4-1.9L DSL Turbo (ALH)SECTION With Manufacturer's Scan Tool

Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor -G71- and Barometric Pressure (BARO) Sensor -F96-, Checking

The altitude sensor is located in the Diesel direct injection system control module. The manifold absolute pressure sensor is a separate component and is located in the pipe between the charge air cooler and intake manifold.

NOTE: Only gold-plated contacts may be used to repair the terminals in the manifold absolute pressure sensor with intake manifold temperature sensor.

Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 (Connecting scan tool and selecting engine electronics control module. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool)

Indicated on display:

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX

- Press buttons -0- and -8- for the function "Read measured value block" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

Indicated on display:

Read measured value block
Enter display group number XXX

- Press buttons -0-, -1- and -0- for "Display group number 10" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

Read measured value block 10 ->
0 mg/H 1027 mbar 1013 mbar 0.0 %

- Compare display in field 2 (BARO Sensor -F96) with display in field 3 (MAP Sensor -G71) and display on turbocharger test unit VAG 1397/A with one another.
Specification: The pressures must be the same (tolerance ± 30 mbar)

NOTE: The turbocharger test unit is required to provide an independent figure for comparison. The turbocharger test unit must be set to measuring range I (absolute pressure). A barometer can be used instead.

If value in display field 2 deviates:
- Press the -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the -Q- button.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replace Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) -J248-.

Value in display field 3 deviates:
- Press the -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the -Q- button.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove wiper arms and plenum cover.

- Connect test box VAG 1598/31 to control unit wiring harness.
- Remove the right headlight.
- Pull the 4-pin connector off intake manifold pressure sensor -G71- with intake manifold temperature sensor -G72- -arrow-. Fitting location overview.

- Check wiring between test box and connector for open circuit using wiring diagram:
Terminal 3 + socket 31
Terminal 4 + socket 71
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohm
- Check wires for short to one another, to vehicle Ground and to battery positive (B+).
Specification: Infinite Ohm

If no fault is detected in the wiring:
- If wiring and the resistance measurement values are OK, replace Diesel Direct Fuel Injection Engine Control Module -J248-.
RENDER: 1.0x

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
