Nail in tire sidewall — can this be patched or do I need a new tire?

Ran over a nail and it's in the sidewall, not the tread. Tire is only 4 months old with tons of tread left. The shop says they can't patch it and I need a new tire. Is this legit or are they trying to upsell me?

The shop is right — **sidewall punctures cannot be safely repaired**. This isn't an upsell.
Here's why: The sidewall flexes constantly as you drive. A patch or plug in the sidewall will work loose because of that flex. The tread area is reinforced with steel belts and doesn't flex much, so repairs hold. The sidewall has only rubber and fabric cords — not enough structure to support a repair.
Every tire manufacturer and the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) says the same thing: only the center 75% of the tread face is repairable. Anything in the shoulder or sidewall = new tire.
I know it sucks on a 4-month-old tire. Check if you bought road hazard coverage when you got them — most tire shops offer it for exactly this situation.
Legit. I tried a plug in a sidewall once to "get by" and the tire blew out on the highway at 70mph 2 weeks later. Scariest moment of my life. Not worth the risk to save $150.
