AC compressor clutch engages then immediately disengages — cycling on and off

2011 Chevrolet Cruze
AC was working fine last summer. This year it blows warm and I can hear the compressor click on for about 2 seconds then click off, over and over. Rapid cycling. Is this a refrigerant issue or is the compressor dying?

Rapid cycling is almost always **low refrigerant**. Here's what's happening:
The low-pressure switch detects enough pressure → engages clutch → compressor pulls the remaining refrigerant → pressure drops below threshold → switch cuts the clutch → pressure equalizes → cycle repeats.
This is actually the system protecting itself. If the compressor ran with low refrigerant, it would burn out (no lubrication — the oil circulates with the refrigerant).
**What to do:**
1. Get a manifold gauge set or take it to a shop for a pressure check
2. If low, you have a leak somewhere — AC systems are sealed, they don't "use up" refrigerant
3. Common leak points on the Cruze: condenser (rock damage), compressor shaft seal, and the service port caps
4. A UV dye charge will find small leaks
Don't just add a can of 134a from the parts store without finding the leak first. You'll be in the same spot next year.
Cruze AC condenser is known for leaking — it sits right behind the bumper and takes a beating from road debris. Check for oily residue on the front of the condenser. If that's the culprit, it's about $150 for the part and a couple hours labor.
If you want to check the wiring side of things (pressure switch, clutch relay, etc.), the [2011 Cruze wiring diagrams](/wiring/2011/Chevrolet/Cruze) have the complete AC circuit. Can rule out electrical issues before spending money on refrigerant.
